I’m back in the default world, so back to playing through my Steam Library once again. I already played the sequel to this game, so it’s interesting to go back to the original and see where it started. The gameplay is basically the same, so this time I’ve started trying to work out a strategy to destroy the portals and win the game.
After playing a few times I found I wasn’t getting anywhere. I’d purchase everything that I could and see how it played out, but the enemy known only as the Greed would soon overwhelm me. My crown would be taken, and my Kingdom would fall.

After consulting a strategy guide I started to understand the basics of how to win. Kingdom: Classic is in essence a strategy game. The most important thing early on is to manage resource income. I had been trying to construct walls and defensive towers too early. What I needed to do was to focus on earning Gold.

This is initially achieved by creating archers. Lots of archers. Archers will hunt rabbits and deer that will generate gold. They will also defend your kingdom at night, slaying any Greed that attempt to penetrate your walls. With some basic defenses you should be able to survive most nights.

After 5 or so days you will experience your first Blood Moon. This event makes the Greed strong, and they will send their strongest force after you on this night. With archers at the ready you should be able to live through the onslaught.

At this point you will find that archers won’t generate as much gold as they used to. If you don’t act, your income stream will reduce and you will be unable to build up your defenses. It’s time to expand your kingdom, create more builders, and start the next stage in the process: agriculture.

With farms you will be able to send peasants to till the land. Each farm will generate several coins each day when fully upgraded. With these coins you can build up your defenses even more and upgrade your kingdom. Eventually you will be able to build catapults, machines essential for defending against the ever stronger Greed each night.

In the final stages of the game you will be able to upgrade to the Stone Age. This will allow you to build stone walls with heavy defense, stone towers that can hold multiple archers, and most importantly: Knights. Knights can lead expeditions away from the Kingdom to achieve the ultimate goal of destroying the portals which the Greed attack from.

Unfortunately this was the point where I got overwhelmed. I think I built my farms too late, expanding in the wrong direction. I was able to generate enough income to build up my forces, but it was too late. In the time I had wasted the Greed had become too strong. After an unsuccessful attempt to destroy a Portal there was another Blood Moon. All I could do was watch helplessly as wall after wall was destroyed, weapons and tools were torn from my men, and my Crown bounced around the ground.

The Greed took my Crown again. My Kingdom fell again. A new King rises to create a new Kingdom. Will they be the one to finally defeat the enemy?
