Simplicity of Train Valley

I’m back trying to play every game in my Steam Library, and this time I’m playing one about trains. It’s a very simple puzzle game that can quickly get overwhelming if you don’t plan your tracks carefully. Confusion and explosions abound in this fun little game.

The premise of Train Valley is simple: build railways and get trains from one city to the next. Trains will spawn in cities and will display their target destination represented by the colour of the city. Connect the two cities, launch the trains and get them where they need to go.

The twist is that when you create a junction, you create a switch. You have to make sure these switches are set right so that the trains use the right tracks. If you send a train to the wrong destination, then you will lose money. Alongside all of this, you need to make sure your trains don’t crash into each other.

Playing the first few levels I found this game very easy to play. I was about to start getting bored when I got to the fourth stage. I made one small mistake with my track layout and things started spiralling out of control. Trains started spawning and eventually leaving stations by themselves. Inevitably they started crashing into each other, destroying my tracks and failing the objectives.

Suddenly this simple game was complex and challenging.

I don’t have a fully formed opinion on this game yet, but I’m not stopping any trains. I feel like this is a game I could actually finish.
